I was born in Holland and migrated to Australia at an early age. My first success as an artist was when I won first prize in an art competition at my primary school at the age of 10. The small winter scene was a watercolour, but it looked like an oil as the paint had been applied so liberally.
It wasn’t until 15 years later that I started to take painting more seriously. My preferred medium is oils but I also work in watercolour and pastel. I tend to choose the medium to suit the subject. I’m not a prolific artist as sometimes I may take a year to complete a paintingalthough during this time I may have three or four in various stages of completion. My preferred subjects are Australian high country landscapes, but I also enjoy painting subjects acquired during my overseas travels.
I’ve won a number of regional awards and been selected as a finalist in major art competitions. As a rule, however, I don’t enter many competitions. I accept commissions provided the subject is of mutual interest to the client and myself. I’ve been painting for about 45 years now and been fortunate to sell most of my work. I do seem to become attached to some which I like to keep for a number of years but most eventually find their way to market.
I’m very pleased and honoured to be represented by Myrtleford Gallery as I know Jim sets a high standard.
